At least, they were, before he abandoned the craft of cinematography to try directing. Wide lenses, low angles, steely palettes, horizontal motion, and visible light sources are his calling card. Still, his career is not all caped crusaders, and the director of photography has established a personal style that transcends genres. His favorite iteration of the character wasn't even the comics, but the campy 60s TV show whose visuals are at complete odds with what Pfister would devise for the 21st century Batman. Weirdly enough, Wally Pfister never considered himself a big fan of Gotham's brooding protector. The Chicago-born cinematographer was, for some years, synonymous with Christopher Nolan's cinema and, more specifically, The Dark Knight trilogy. Our subject today shall be the man whose gloomy visual idioms helped redefine the superhero genre and its aesthetic possibilities – Wally Pfister. With that in mind, let's reminisce about the filmography of Aaron Sorkin and its presence at the Academy Awards…Īfter looking at Dion Beebe and Rodrigo Prieto's filmographies, it's time to consider another of 2005's Best Cinematographer nominees. Furthermore, the Academy has long shown they are keen on Sorkin's brand of self-righteous garrulousness, and almost all of his movies have received Oscar nominations. This is a picture of political repression and revolutionary ideals that reflects and comments on our present time. Whatever faults the movie has, such matters are unlikely to undermine what already feels like a sterling awards narrative. Some would argue it does this too emphatically, choosing formulaic drama over probing political critique and structuring the narrative around Tom Hayden's redemption to the detriment of the other historical figures. The Academy is known to love an inspirational true story and Sorkin's sophomore directorial effort fits the bill. Even in times of pandemic and one of the weirdest Oscar races ever, it feels like a safe bet to rely on AMPAS to shower the movie with gold. With The Trial of the Chicago 7 streaming on Netflix, one of the season's strongest awards contenders is now widely available.
